Narbonne is a commune in southern France in the Occitanie region. It lies 849 km (528 mi) from Paris in the Aude department, of which it is a sub-prefecture. It is located about 15 km (9 mi) from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and was historically a prosperous port, but declined from the 14th century following a change in the course of the river Aude.
This pack does not contain a full photogrammetry extract of the city but rather focuses on a few emblematic or massive buildings to keep acceptable size and performances for lower configurations.
It contains the following mods:
-Palais des Archevêques: The Palace of the Archbishops of Narbonne is made up of the Old Palace of Romanesque origin and the New Palace of Gothic style . Its facade has three square towers dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. It has been hosting since the 19th century the town hall, the museum of art and history and the archaeological museum. It is after the Palais des Papes, in Avignon , the most important construction of the many residences occupied by the princes of the Church. The entire Palace of the Archbishops of Narbonne and its surroundings were classified as historical monuments in 1840.
This mod also covers the neighbouring Cathedrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur. The idea to build a Gothic cathedral was a political decision made in 1268 by Pope Clement IV, the former archbishop of Narbonne. He decided that it would be a monument made in the magnificent style of the Kingdom of France. The construction of the new cathedral was supposed to begin in 1264, but did not actually start until 1272. The first stone of the current cathedral was laid by Archbishop Maruin on April 13, 1272, in the foundation of the current Chapel of the Sacred Heart.
The choir was finished in 1332, but the rest of the building was never completed, as the result of many factors including sudden changes in the economic status of Narbonne, its unusual size and geographical location (to complete it would have meant demolishing the city wall) and financial constraints.
-Pont des Marchands: this is historic bridge serves as a foundation for a row of houses and shops underneath which the Canal de la Robine runs through the old town. Its segmental arch has a span of approximately 15m. In Roman times the structure featured as many as six arches. It is one of only a handful of bridges worldwide that are lined with shops.
-Eglise Saint-Paul: it was built in 1224 upon the remains of a pre-romanesque church under the leadership of Father Robaldus (or Robaldo) who later became bishop of Pavia in 1232. The tomb of Saint Paul , first bishop of Narbonne, was transferred in 1244 to the choir of the church. The current composition is the result of numerous studies and various restorations, which began from the 15th century by changes in the nave. The building is classified as historical monuments in 1862.
-Halles de Narbonne: This Baltard-style pavilion was built at the beginning of the 20th century near the Canal de la Robine and houses approximately 70 stores.
-Parc des Sports et de l'Amitié: this is a multi-use stadium which is currently used mostly for rugby union matches and is the home stadium of RC Narbonne. The stadium is able to hold 12,000 people and was built in 1979.
-Gare de Narbonne: the train station opened on 22 April 1857 and is on the Bordeaux–Sète railway and Narbonne–Portbou railway lines. The station is served by TGV (high speed), Intercités (long distance, also night train) and TER (local) services operated by the SNCF. The line was electrified through Narbonne in 1935.
