KAUW - Wausau Downtown Airport - Wausau, WI
Wausau Downtown Airport is a mid-sized regional airport in Central Wisconsin. It boasts an active flight training program and handles primarily General Aviation aircraft as well as mid-sized Business Jets. It has two paved runways runways (primary is 13-31 at 5200' and the secondary is 5-23 at 3041') and also a single water runway (8000' in the adjacent Wisconsin River).
The draw to this airport for me is the Stearman aircraft based on the field in which you can take flight instruction named Orange Roughy. I found some videos online of this aircraft which are done well. Also, if you have the DC Designs Stearman, flightsim.to user zachb made a livery for Orange Roughy you can find here. If you have purchased the DC Designs PT-17 and have the livery from zachb loaded in your sim, Orange Roughy has a place on the ramp as part of this scenery.
Notes:
- Water Runway added in the adjacent river
- Night lighting added with hand placed taxi lights
- Signage added for runways
- Parking locations moved to line up with painted 'T's
- New parking location added inside a couple of open hangars
- Replaced AI hangars with mostly default scenery hangars. Some were also added from the Windhover Open Hangar library (Thanks again Windhover!)
- Numerous scenery objects placed for added realism including some objects added off the field as well
- Terminal building is not an exact mach but somewhat similar from the colinj library.
- From internet pictures and maps, it appears the airport should have a wind tee on the field. I couldn't find an object for the tee so I substituted a wind sock in it's place
- Terraforming the area and water
Installation:
- Extract the package from the zip file and place in your community folder
Credits:
- Objects used from the Colinj libraries from Flightsim.to and included in the download (Thanks colinj!)
- Objects from the UK2000 freeware scenery library which can be downloaded from the In-sim marketplace
- Windy Things library for the lighted windsock
- I also use objects included from the Free World Updates. As new airports are released, additional scenery objects become available for use. If things are missing, it is likely you don't have these world updates installed. You can download these in the in-game Marketplace for free. I try to have a mix of default and updated objects so there should always be some of the scenery objects present.
And as always, enjoy flying in Minnesota! (and it's neighbor here to the east.)

I work in an office building that is immediately adjacent to Runway 13 @ KAUW. I routinely see Orange Roughy taking flight or landing on 13/31 providing both instruction for tailwheel endorsement, and also pleasure flights during public events. There also used to be a medical helicopter (N498P), a Bell 407, based on the field out of the hangar immediately behind the static helicopter depicted in this photo. Through a change in medical EMS service in the state this helicopter is now based at 60WI. However this helicopter, and its company aircraft (N611SJ), an Airbus H-145, can be seen parking in a similar location to the static helicopter during refueling operations. N611SJ is based at nearby KCWA. which replaced the base at KAUW.
If you're in to historical flight re-creation this airport also served as the commercial airport for the region from 1927 to 1969, when it was replaced by KCWA. To my knowledge the primary aircraft to service the area was a DC-3.
Great replication from the available photos/satellite imagery, couple of points for improvement, a few more hangars have been built and are under construction in the row shown in the foreground of the 3rd photo. they are of similar style to the ones depicted, so there is some opportunity for further updates.
Thanks for the great rendition of a familiar airport, it is a great addition to my simulator.

Thanks for the information! I enjoy hearing of people who have personal connections to the airport.
As far as new hangars, thanks for the information! I pulled a lot of my information from the local flying service facebook pictures and I think it showed more hangars being constructed. Thanks for commenting! Enjoy the sounds of Orange Roughy! Hopefully some day it will make it over to MN and I can see it too. (Or I can come over to Wausau I suppose...)

Oh heck yeah! This one is in my airspace haha! Thanks!

Probably not much fun from the ATC stand point - only two RNAV approaches to the field. I bet CWA down the road would be more fun from the Center's standpoint.

Very nice. And a huge credit for using open hangars. They add so much life vs other addons where the hangars are closed and look lifeless. This is a great addition!
For others... there is an active fly-in social club that is either based at Wausau, or that at least Wausau participates in. Great destination for simulator $100 hamburger flights... The link shows other Wisconsin airports that participate. And click on the "RESTAURANTS" link at the linked page and it will produce a list of other $100 hamburger destinations in Wisconsin, plus a few in neighboring states. Remember, its Wisconsin, so think "Cheeseburger"!

I didn't know about the fly in hamburger club but it's a great idea! From what I've seen it appears that Wausau has a very active General Aviation scene which is fantastic. Now with gas prices where they are, I can make the drive from eastern MN and end up with the $100 cheeseburger! Thanks for commenting!
