The Dempster Highway begins 40 km east of Dawson City in Yukon and stretches north, 742 km to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. It was built during the 60’s and 70’s to provide a supply route for northern towns and villages.
Fort McPherson Airport is the 4th of the 6 airports along the Dempster Highway, located at KM 481, 2 nautical miles (3.7 km; 2.3 mi) south of Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, Canada. Originally named Peel’s River Post, it began in 1840 as a Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) trading post—the first post established in the lower Mackenzie Valley. The HBC strategically located the post on the lower Peel River to primarily trade with the Gwich’in community. The airport serves seasonal flights to Inuvik Airport on Aklak Air when the road across the Peel River is closed.
