The Aérospatiale Gazelle, also known as the SA 340, SA 341, and SA 342, is a French five-seat helicopter commonly used for light transport, scouting, and light attack duties. Its power is derived from a single Turbomeca Astazou turbine engine, and it was the first helicopter to incorporate a fenestron tail instead of the conventional tail rotor. Designed by Sud Aviation and later Aérospatiale, the Gazelle was manufactured in France and the United Kingdom through a joint production agreement with Westland Aircraft.
The Gazelle has had a long and distinguished history, with various models serving in military and civilian roles worldwide. Its lightweight and versatile design have made it a popular choice for a wide range of applications. The Gazelle's fenestron tail also provides improved safety and reduced noise levels compared to helicopters with conventional tail rotors. Overall, the Aérospatiale Gazelle is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of its designers and remains an important part of helicopter technology and history. It is used with a variety of armaments in at least 23 countries to attack targets such as armored vehicles, other helicopters, slow-moving objects and infrastructure.
